Overview

Under supervision of a Fire Department Officer, performs fire suppression, rescue, and property conservation activities.  Performs as first responder to provide basic life support and emergency care to sudden illness or accident victims.  Participates in or conducts fire prevention activities including inspection and code enforcement, and public education.  Participates in drills and other department training activities.  This is specialized worked performed in accordance with National and Salt Lake City Fire Department performance and training standards.  All persons hired in this position are required to achieve journey-level certification by completing a Utah State Department of Labor recognized and approved apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must be 18 years of age and eligible to work in the US on or before the written exam (April 28, 2018).  Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a GED or equivalent on or before June 30, 2018.  In addition, applicants must possess a valid Driver License by the time of employment.

Applications must be completed no later than March 31, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. (MDT) in order to be considered.  Those who have submitted their information on the interest list will be sent an email stating the Fire Department is now accepting applications for entry-level firefighter and firefighter/paramedic.

 

PROPOSED PROCESS:

The Fire Department proposes a written exam and an oral board assessment as the selection devices to create an Eligibility Register.  In addition, candidates will participate in a pass/fail physical ability test (CPAT) before hire.

 

Written Exam                                                                                                                   40%

 

The written exam questions will be obtained from a test bank provided by Ergometrics.  The exam will be administered on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. 

 

The written exam will be the FireTEAM test.  FireTEAM is a video-based testing system that assesses critical skills necessary to be a firefighter and includes the often overlooked content areas of teamwork and human relations as well as mechanical aptitude, reading ability and basic math skills.

 

The completed written exams will be sent to Ergometrics for scoring. The Fire Department believes a list of approximately 75-100 individuals will be sufficient to meet the hiring needs over the next two years.

 

Oral Board Assessment                                                                                                  60%

 

The oral board assessment will be conducted similar to an interview.  The idea is to evaluate a candidate’s ability to organize and express his/her thoughts, ideas and actions in verbal form.

 

The oral board raters will consist of several member ranks from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, such as Battalion Chief, Captain, and firefighter.  The rating will be a “1 to 5” point anchored scale measured against specific performance dimensions.  The oral board assessment will measure the following behavior dimensions: Problem Solving; Organizational Skills; Knowledge/Experience; Persuasiveness; Oral Communication Skills; Written Communication Skills.

 

Method of Scoring and Ranking:

An applicant’s final score will be obtained by adding the weighted numerically scored portions of the written examination and oral board assessment

 

Preference points will be then be added to that score as follows:

 

Utah Paramedic:                               1 point

Disabled Veteran:                             10 points

Veteran:                                          5 points

 

The Candidates will be ranked according to their final score and placed on the Firefighter Eligibility Register.  Candidates will be instructed to submit paramedic certification and DD214 (for Veteran’s Preference) on the day of the oral board assessment.  

 

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)                                                             Pass/Fail

 

CPAT is a standardized test adopted by the Salt Lake City Fire Department.  The IAFF/ICHIEFS have teamed up with ten of North America’s leading fire departments and unions through the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative and developed and validated the CPAT, resulting in a consistent test for hiring of candidate firefighters.  The test is currently being used by 230+ cities nationwide.  It will be administered at Utah Valley University.  Not all candidates will initially go through the CPAT process; rather they will be sent as needed according to openings. 

 

The CPAT is a sequence of eight events requiring you to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner.  This test was developed to allow fire departments to obtain trainable candidates who are physically able to perform essential job tasks at fire scenes.  This is a pass/fail test based on a validated maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

 

The timed events in CPAT include: Stair Climb, Hose Drag, Equipment Carry, Ladder Raise & Extension, Forcible Entry, Search, Rescue, and Ceiling Breach & Pull. 

 

All finalist candidates will be given a CPAT orientation guide / preparation manual at least eight weeks in advance of their test.

 

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS:

 

Candidates may request a reasonable disability-based accommodation for any part of the examination process.  Requests accompanied by medical documentation must be submitted to the Fire Department HR Representative at least ten (10) business days prior to the examination date.

Qualifications

  • Must pass all phases of the designated and approved Civil Service Examination Process. Will be subject to and must pass a Criminal Background Investigation.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of GED certificate before the date of hire.
  • Must pass a physical agility test which demonstrates the applicant will be able to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must satisfy the medical condition requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582.
  • Must possess Utah State Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician at time or hire or within the timetable prescribed by the Salt Lake City Fire Department. This certification is subject to periodic renewal and must be maintained throughout employment as a Salt Lake City Fire Fighter.
  • Possession of a valid driver license.
