  • Overview

    During duty shift, supervises operators monitoring and adjusting the wastewater treatment facility and processes.  Coordinates with the lab and maintenance sections of the plant when appropriate.  Responsible for ensuring plant effluent meets permit and environmental requirements.  Reports to Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Manager


    • On duty shift, supervises the operation of wastewater treatment processing equipment, including pumps, filters, digesters, aerators, screens, rag rakes, grit chambers, compressors, blowers, boilers, energy generators, chlorine evaporators, gas collectors, augers and associated equipment according to plant guidelines and procedures.  Helps with work assignments when necessary, such as during emergencies or lack of adequate personnel
    • Troubleshoots’ operational problems.  On shift, decides what equipment to take out of service or put back in service and when.  Resolves or recommends resolution of problems referred by subordinate operators.
    • Calculates plant loading and performs or requests adjustments in pumping, chemical treatment or other factors to keep plant within operational guidelines and EPA discharge permit.  Works closely with Chief Operator to make adjustments to treatment system.  Coordinates with Maintenance and Lab sections.
    • Monitors telemetry and completes operational logs with responsibility for their accuracy and completeness.
    • Ensures safe working practices and security.  Completes accident reports.  Supervises changing of chlorine tanks and responds to chlorine systems emergencies.
    • May request maintenance, repairs or installation work.
    • As shift supervisor with appropriate management responsibilities, resolves personnel problems, authorizes the use of overtime, and issues disciplinary action.  Checks and monitors operators' work to ensure completion; conducts performance evaluations
    • Participates in and may direct in-plant training programs.  Attends outside classes and seminars as necessary.
    • Serves as acting Chief Operator during absence of regularly classified incumbent, if management determines individual operator is qualified.
    • Performs other related duties as necessary.


    • High School or G.E.D. equivalent plus five years' paid experience as a Water Reclamation Plant Operator or a closely related position.  Two years' formal education in wastewater treatment or a related engineering field at an accredited college or university may be substituted for operational experience on a year-for-year basis.
    • Knowledge of management principals, including delegation of work assignments, resolution of grievances and handling of personnel problems.  Demonstrated ability to prepare and present technical report concerning water reclamation plant operations and related functions, extensive knowledge of the operations and management of the Salt Lake City Sewer and Water Reclamation System.
    • Proven ability to supervise subordinates to achieve objectives, and maintain plant safety and process integrity.
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.
    • Possession of a Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification from the State of Utah or an equivalent certification from another state.
