Salt Lake City’s Streets Division is looking for applicants ready to gain or improve their technical skills and directly impact our community by maintaining and enhancing roads, sidewalks, and related infrastructure for Salt Lake City.  Our Asphalt Equipment Operator II operates a wide variety of light-to-medium-sized equipment for construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets.  We’re looking for someone ready to advance their career and improve safety and quality of life for those in Salt Lake City at the same time.

As part of the City’s snow fighting team, the Asphalt Equipment Operator will receive up to $2,000 of extra pay. Additionally, this position is eligible for a sign-on bonus of $500 after one month of satisfactory performance.

 

 

Responsibilities

    •  Safely operate a range of equipment for a variety of asphalt applications
      • Low-complexity equipment, including 3/4-ton pickups, compressors and jackhammers, plate compactors, hand tools, and power tools
      • Medium-complexity equipment, including trailers, rollers, ten-wheelers, tank trailers, bobtails, tar pots, Lee Boys, vibratory rollers, loaders, transports, snowplows, etc.
    • Perform road maintenance and construction with Surface Treatment and District Asphalt Crews
      • The District Asphalt Crew manages road surface preparation, pothole repair, dig-outs, asphalt tie-ins, skin and deep patching, crack sealing, and grading
      • The Surface Treatment Crew oversees fog sealing, slurry sealing, chip sealing, planning, reclaiming, overlay, road surface preparation, in-lays, asphalt tie-ins, crack sealing, and grading
    • Transport signs, barricade equipment, tools, and other supplies to and from job sites, and set up individual sites in accordance with traffic control regulations
    • Notify area residents and businesses of upcoming construction and provide information on traffic and parking/vehicle relocation
    • Document vehicle conditions and perform routine maintenance on vehicles prior to use
    • Perform snow removal duties in accordance with the City's Snow Removal Program
    • Perform additional duties as assigned, including training of seasonal and hourly employees

Qualifications

    • Two years of related experience, including equipment operation in general labor, construction, or related field, OR the successful completion of the Division’s Asphalt Equipment Operator training program plus six months of experience
    • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement or a Class B CDL with the ability to obtain a Class A with the endorsement within three months of hiring
    • Flagger Certification or the ability to obtain within one month of hiring
    • General familiarity with procedures and materials used in asphalt maintenance and construction
    • Knowledge of routine equipment maintenance and the ability to detect the need for and to make minor repairs and adjustments.
    • Written and verbal communication skills, and ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
    • Ability to work and relate well with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
    • Ability to operate electronic input devices
