JOB SUMMARY:    

 

This position is a time limited position and only funded through June 2021.

 

Natural Resources Assistant (an apprentice position) are responsible for looking after, maintaining and improving natural areas, trails, wetland areas and other outdoor sites within Salt Lake City. This position receives ongoing training and skill development relevant to the position.  This role will give the candidate the opportunity to develop the skills needed to advance within this field.

Responsibilities

Natural Resource Assistants will develop some of the following skills:  

  • Supporting plant growth and success through weed control
  • Installation and maintenance of fencing and signs
  • Litter cleanup and general maintenance of trails and properties 
  • Renewing and restoring plant life (such as seeding, native plant propagation and other planting techniques)
  • Maintenance and construction of trails, including use of hand tools and handheld power tools
  • Locating and identifying native and non-native plant species, conducting surveys and collecting information
  • Working with the public and supporting Public Land programs and activities
  • Communicate and update co-workers and supervisor of tasks and projects

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. A strong desire to develop and grow knowledge, skills and experience in plant identification, support of natural landscapes, and trail management
  2. A strong desire to develop experience and knowledge of natural resources management in an urban environment
  3. Comfortable working in an outdoor setting for an entire shift which could include all possible weather conditions for the season  
  4. Ability to use hand tools and light equipment. Physical ability to carry a heavy pack and hike up to six miles in flat or rocky terrain on remote trails
  5. Must be 16 years of age or older

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience working with underrepresented communities including BIPOC, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+, refugees, and persons living with disabilities. 
  1. Outgoing personality, enjoys people and the outdoors
  1. A positive attitude and passion for the work, being on time, and a desire to learn.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Work is primarily outdoors under a variety of weather and environmental conditions and may involve hiking to reach the job site. Work locations include Salt Lake City’s foothills and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the Jordan River Parkway, properties along City Creek, Red Butte Creek, Emigration Creek, Parleys Creek, and various city parks and greenways. Additional work including office work, research and information gathering, data entry, and training occurs in an indoor office setting or remotely from home. 
  1. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift up to 30 lbs.  Difficult working positions; may have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods and squat or crawl.

 

  1. Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round.

Work Schedule:

Typically, a Monday-Friday schedule, 7:00am – 3:30pm. Rarely, evenings and weekends may be required as scheduled in advance. Work occurs in all weather conditions and will normally be 40 hours per week. Positions are funded through June 31, 2021. Work may continue beyond that date if funded.
